What I propose is something along these lines:

Come as you can into and out of Portland and Eugene, coordinating with the people you MUST see. And I will say: I am going to invite the folks from Mississippi from the first Oregon trip: Aron, Laura (who's now married), Edlyn, Mike Cormack (who's also now married to his wife Crystal, who's expecting). Aron is finishing Ed. school this summer in Portland and I would imagine she can come for sure.

In choosing airports, realize that coming in groups would be nice for whoever has to be dispatched to get you ( mostly, I would think, me). The cabin is about twenty minutes off I-5, twenty miles SOUTH of Eugene. That means that Eugene is easiest if you're coming in mid-week. Then again, to see any of you, I'd drive as far as necessary. Of course, if you're West Coast driving in your fuel-efficient vehicle would be extremely smart, and the trip straight to the Cabin is only 8 hours from the Bay Area.

I propose as base the River cabin, a location most of you saw on the last Oregon trip (though I think we had bad weather at that point). I am not at a wealthy point in my life. The cabin will mean little cost to anyone in lodging, excepting one proposed journey to the coast at some point mid-week if you guys desire, and perhaps one night in Portland if a lot of people are flying in or out at similar times.

At the river cabin, which is now equipped with a HOT TUB and FLATSCREEN TV/DVD, we will relax, perhaps go up the road and camp for a night, perhaps kick to the coast to revisit the Tillamook cheese factory and the Pelican Bay Brewery, but mostly remain at our own private house and river. Scheduled Events, as brainstormed by the group and requested from this list, may include: a partial En Fuego ensemble reunion performance, a poker night, a badminton or ultimate Frisbee mini-tournament at the field in back, a bike tour on the gentle, twenty mile bike path to and from the town of Cottage Grove, a free whitewater kayak trip (my father owns three hard-shells and three two-man inflatables) to the nearby, world famous Umpqua or Mckenzie Rivers, and so on.

There are three bedrooms, AND the back deck has now been fully enclosed in Gazebo with mosquito netting. That set-up is complete with couch and carpet, and I have dozens of mattresses-- you can sleep outside comfortably lulled by the sound of the river. Otherwise, we will hike the thirty miles of single-track four minutes away in the Umpqua National Forest, jump at the thirty-foot waterfall pool, make communal dinners with different people having taken responsibility for a night (KAIROS STYLE!), laze in the sun, swim in the swimming hole, fish for cutthroat, enjoy the bounty of the tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, zucchini, blueberries, raspberries, apples, plums, apricots, figs, and strawberries that will be ripe in the garden, drink beers and while away the lamplit night hearing the river fifty feet below, talking of old times, of future times...

You can be there. Or it can be your loss.

Speaking of loss, I've recently ended up broken-hearted and single again. A story too painful to tell here, though if you call I'll answer, or actually call you back (I can hear Jess, with whom I've been playing phone tag for the last four months, choking with laughter in the background. But I'll try).

I am putting down my number here: (541) 510-7864. My email is mcopperm@uoregon.edu. Call (and leave your number unless you're sure I have it!) or email-- let me know. It makes everything seem so transitory. So yes, a Kairos reunion would be great.

Also, does anyone think a med school blog would be interesting? There have been a lot of really great issues coming up among my classmates -- like our relationships to the cadavers we work on in anatomy lab. Turns out several of us have been "checking in" with the bodies, to thank them or just say hi. Some are disturbed by the idea of using a human being (or former human being, depending on how you think about it), some feel a positive connection with the people who donated their earthly remains so we could learn. Either way, anatomy has brought out entirely new emotional reactions in all of us.

So give me feedback on the med school blog idea if you like it; if not, I know you all are too nice to say so. I'll take the silence as an "eh."

Back to studying!

Well, I'll blog...

Hi, fine and lovely people of Kairos past.

I do hope everyone is well everywhere. My updates are simple: I'm almost done with a year of teaching. Things are terrific with my girlfriend, Quinn. I'm planning to spend the summer laying low around the Oregon area, living on the cheap, and getting the book I've been working on now for two or three years to the point where I have a 'salable' draft.

I'm writing to do two things. The first is to mention, quickly, that I'm being published next Fall in the literary journal 'Brevity,' which specializes in the short non-fiction essay. I don't know how the heck it is that the first thing I'm publishing is non-fiction, especially non-fiction that I created by taking two paragraphs from a failed short story I wrote two years ago (ok, it was thinly veiled autobiography even then) and adding two lines. The venue is decently prestigious, however. And it's, well, encouragement and an audience.

The second, and more important thing: I once upon a time created something called an 'Oregon trip.' For a while I was a uniter. Then I lost my credentials by being too broke to travel to Boston last Fall. To redeem myself, I propose that people consider coming out to Oregon in the Summer for a retreat out at the cabin my folks have on the river. I say, we do it in mid August, though for me the dates are awful flexible. California folks, it's only seven and a half hours from the Bay to the cabin, and a little less coming from Seattle and environs. I'd go a week, open house, drop-in-as-you-will, with a couple events interspersed-- a camping run just up the road, or perhaps a kayaking day for those who want it on the nearby Umpqua or Rogue. A week out of time, in the Oregon summer, with no worries, no demands. Consider it. If I hear positive response, I will make it happen.

mike

iGoogle

Hello long lost friends.

So I have to admit I had forgotten about our lovely little blog (gasp!), but then Luke reminded me that we had it. And I have recently discovered iGoogle which can track certain blogs that I tell it to, which somehow I guess makes my life easier. Anyway, I just "subscribed" to this blog, which means a) I won't be so behind on the times and funny stories about our adventures that I can't believe I'm just reading now (Rica you're comic genius, David Sedaris watch out) and b) I hope you all "subscribe" too and that the website is revived. Yeah.

I guess I should now say something timely and amusing about myself now. I am supposed to be switching projects soon at work, which means I should be finishing up all of my current projects, but somehow instead I find myself completely without focus and doing things like making iGoogle webpages and such. After work yesterday a few co-workers and I watched the local JV baseball team game and ate seeds. I felt like I was still in high school too. Go Generals (yes, I work in the South, it scares me too).

Okay, I'm still uncaffeinated and rambling now. I hope this finds you all well and blogging more soon.
xoxo
j

Left Coast: Notes from the Field

Saturday 1600 hrs: Darcy and Alli meet me at the airport. They are sunglassed, flip-flopped, smiley. They emit an almost blinding glow. I have been covered in ice for 3 months. I try, unsuccessfully, to remember why I ever left California.
Saturday later: Darcy and Alli demonstrate a remarkable ability to navigate the Stanford Shopping Center with their eyes closed, including ring-polishing stations. However, none of us can figure out 8th grade science. Even those of us who teach it.

Sunday 1000 hrs: Alli channels Billy Blanks, and I realize I can conquer any med school interview, as long as I reach towards a higher power and consider giving my interviewer a left jab.
Sunday 1500 hrs: Darcy asks for directions to the BART station. Worst local ever.

Monday 1320 hrs: I'm talking about Kairos in an interview, again.

Tuesday 1530 hrs: Mike and I talk on the phone for several minutes before realizing we're looking at each other.
Tuesday 1700 hrs: The English Department offers revealing dresses and wedge heeled shoes. Quade is on here. Though some names are mysterious to me. The point: she's coming to Eugene for the MFA at the University of Oregon, having been unhappy in Texas, and I'll still be here next year since my girlfriend Quinn still has another year in these parts. Kirstin claims to believe people from Eugene are 'talented' and have 'good hearts,' something I had to convince her of by explaining that Hunt and I are the exception; most people don't burn boxes of kittens for fun, or laugh in an evil, dorky manner while doing evil, dorky things. I think she almost believes me. The point here is the following:

Eugene: 2

Texas: 0

Anchorage: 0

Seattle: 2?

DC: 1

L.A.: 1

NY: 1?

Boston: ? Unknown-- those of you who count Cambridge as Boston may be living a lie. Ok. Cambridge: 3

San Fran: Unclear. I suppose there are 4 fairly confirmed folks. But then, the greater Bay Area is so spread as to make the question of whether you can count 'San Fran' when you live in Cupertino a valid one. Also, the syntax of that last sentence was tortured within an inch of meaning.

Bloomington, IA: 1

And a number of other places. I'm sure my numbers are wrong. The point is that in terms of Kairos concentration, Eugene has recently surpassed the nation's capital, as well as the capital of Alaska, and the growth is exponential: 1 and now twice that, or 2. Who knows how many Kairosians will live here by years end? Will you be the next?

Eugene has a lot to offer. Why, recently we had the first day of sun in four months, and let me tell you, it was glorious. Well, ok, first five minutes of sun, when for a moment the sun cut the low-hanging clouds and blinded the light-sensitive, setting off a string of accidents and giving hundreds of melatonin-deprived residents sunburn. Still. The point here is that you should consider it. Sure Harvard and MIT have prestige, but consider the benefits of obscurity: in this lightless, rain-soaked little hamlet, hippies are still a force to be reckoned with, the peace sign still a potent symbol, and when you want to see a movie it's only six months lag time from release in a more major American city. I mean, think about it.

m

Coolest website ever

Those of you who know me well know that I have an obsession (verging on unhealthy) with fun t-shirts. threadless.com is a site that has visitors submit t-shirt designs which everyone then gets to vote on. So she writes to me and says that dinner will be on her company's tab, because it's "key background reporting." Does the expense account mean it's not a date?

Oh well.

Someday I'll meet a nice young lady who can put up with me . . .

PS Obviously am no longer seeing Steph.
PPS Caracas is dope.

Your plans this Friday night

You are seeing Pan's Labyrinth. Seriously. Go now. I saw it last night and was absolutely floored. It's a fable, told in the grand, grotesque tradition of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, about history and war and childhood and imagination. It has the magic of Cinema Paradiso or Whale Rider, and the intensity and urgency of Schindler's List. Definitely not for kids, and not for the squeamish (quote from my roommate, who saw me squirm through the particularly brutal parts: "How are you going to get through medical school?"), but this movie offers so much more than blood and guts (giant frog guts, in this case) that I can't even describe the experience. It reminds you how powerful movies can be; I started crying maybe halfway through and didn't stop til the credits came up. In the good way that that happens.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; No longer much fun due to a staggering grading load of undergraduate essays , but getting no taller at an alarming rate, Mike got a degree in self-deprecation, a more constructive form of self-degredation given its' social utility in making other people laugh. (Hunt will note that the phrase 'social utility' was utilized for his benefit, since without appropriately stilted academic diction it's possible the burgeoning economist might have been unduly burdened by incomprehension. Mike would have quantified the specific degree of social utility, but found himself unable to count past one, the total number of brain cells remaining to him after the days grading)
Lately, Mike spends most of his free time in Oregon with a Boston transplant named Quinn Dmitriev, a former Belo-Russian refugee (turned American citizen) who might actually talk faster than Meg Aycinena, though probably not faster than Ms. Aycinena's mother. Quinn, an indie singer-songwriter with a significant Boston following and an indie label record contract, attends Oregon State's MFA in Fiction writing with hopes that a graph of her educational debt in terms of time will be easily recognizable as an exponential function (allusion made, again, for the benefit of Mr. Allcott). Ms. Dmietriev would best be described (for the benefit of Mr. Allcott, or anyone else pursuing Doctoral studies) as possessing, in the opinion of Mr. Copperman, a physical appearance correlating with social/culturally desirable characteristics, ie., being really damn gorgeous.
It is also worth noting that Mr. Copperman continues to write, and has a number of stories pending at Literary Journals, though rejection notices mount in his mailbox in a manner that causes him a significant degree of unhappiness and distress, ie, 'pile up like flowers for his own funeral.'
And, right. Apologies to Mr. Allcott for poking fun, though of course it's just like old times. And word is life for Mr. Allcott is pretty good, so I feel less than bad.:-)

ha!

hi friends! ok, i promise i'll post a bio, but in the meantime, you all have to listen to this. it is f'in hilarious.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6376594

much lurv... pdubs

Bio: Ringo

Ringo has just recently finished a three-year worldwide survey on people's bathroom habits. He eats 12 pounds of rice everyday in preparation for becoming a Sumo wrestler, a goal which has been a number one priority on his list since being knocked over by a 4-year old on a skateboard. His mind reading abilities have gotten him into trouble over the years; he once punched a man in the back of the head for thinking that Ringo "engaged in douchebaggery". He was arrested and put in jail for a year where he earned the nickname "El Diablo del Bano" and got a tattoo of Jessica Rabbit on his left buttock.

But all kidding aside, Ringo is going to apply to Med School.
